How to prepare
The fastest way to solve blood relation questions is to draw a small family tree. Put each generation on its own level, write males as plus signs or squares and females as minus signs or circles, and join married couples with a double line. Then read the statement one link at a time and add it to the tree.
In pointing questions, start from the end of the sentence (my father, my mother) and work backwards to the person being pointed at. Watch for traps such as the only son of my mother, which is the speaker himself when the speaker is male. Never assume a gender that the question has not given; if the gender is missing, the answer must be a word like child, sibling or cousin.
Study tips
- Draw the family tree for every question instead of solving it in your head, even when it looks easy.
- Break long chains such as my father's mother's only son into small steps and replace each step with one relation.
- In coded questions, write the meaning of each symbol under the expression before you build the tree.
