How to prepare

Study history period by period. Attempt one section without looking at the answers, then read every explanation, because it usually holds a second fact (a year, a place or a person) that examiners ask in another form. Keep a timeline notebook and add each battle, reform and movement in order; seeing 1757, 1764, 1857 and 1905 on one line makes the sequence easy to remember.

Link people with places and years in small groups: Governor-Generals with their policies, reformers with their organisations, and satyagrahas with their causes. Revise the questions you got wrong after three days and again after a week. For competitive exams, practise a full section of 13 to 15 questions in about eight minutes to build speed.

Study tips

  • Make a one-page timeline for each period and revise it daily for a week.
  • Group Governor-Generals with their policies, such as Wellesley with the Subsidiary Alliance and Dalhousie with the Doctrine of Lapse.
  • Re-attempt the questions you got wrong after three days to fix them in memory.
